About the Author of ExPat Facts

My name is Matt Ellsworth.  I'm an American.  And I have been an expat (short for expatriate from the Latin ex patria, meaning "out of the fatherland") for more than 8 years.  [Sounds like a confession in a 12-step program, no?]

I first left the U.S. in 1975, spending two years in Chile as a single, living on the local economy and using Spanish constantly.  When I entered the Foreign Service (diplomatic corps) in 1986, I was sent (with family) to Abu Dhabi of the United Arab Emirates for 2 years, followed by 2 years in Jerusalem, and then 2 years in Mexico City.  One of my sons was born in Abu Dhabi, and another in Jerusalem.  While working in the American Embassy in Mexico City, I was responsible for official visitors, including currency exchange, lodging, airport procedures, and language services.

From 1996 to 2000, I was responsible for supporting large American delegations to major international conferences (like the Kyoto conference on climate change).  In this assignment, I was sent on short trips (1-3 weeks) to 20 or so different countries in North and South America, Europe (including Malta), Asia (from Oman to Osaka), and the South Pacific.

I tell you these things just to let you know that I have personal experience with shipping valuables, shipping pets, airport layovers, local foreign air carriers, children in foreign schools, foreign languages, foreign customs, foreign healthcare (including a few scary hospital episodes), foreign foods...foreign everything!  But my experience isn't truly worldwide, nor exhaustive.  I'll need your input to make this site valuable to expats today.

I also want to hear the experience of expats in America--warts and all, as we say.

This is more a message to Matt Ellsworth - I am an American living abroad. Actually in Rosario, Argentina, and I would be interested in contributing, but I can't even figure out how to contact you. So if you read this, please contact me!

This is a message for Matt. Your site looks interesting and sorry to hear about your nephew.

The 31st class is trying to get ahold of members for our reunion on Jan 20 in Rosslyn. Send me an e-mail for details.

Yes, you said that the US Consulate would assist with the costs of burial, etc. In 2004 while travelling to a hospital in N. China, my son suffered a heart attack and remained in the hospital for several days, before I found a donor to assist me with unexpected bills, while transiting through a big China City. I was told by the donor that out of protocol I should contact the USA consulate to let them know that I have secured a donation and advocate on my son's behalf from the German community. I told them that I had already let the consulate know that my son was in intensive care, and they asked me to contact the local mosque, as I was Muslim and there was no need to do that, but after their insistance due to their plight to save my son's health, since the Chinese doctor insisted we should give up, as his health was beyond saving (oh little faith...)

Ultimately I never received any donation even after the consulate asked me to now move my son to one of their friends clinic...eventhough before I had enough means they said there was nothing that they could do except to contact my estranged 80 y.old parents for assistance or the local mosque. After persuasion from the consulate, my son's body was transferred to the 'friends' clinic since they heard that the donor would pay for all of the expenses of my son's treatment and heart surgery.

Anyway, finally no donations arrive and by someone's order, he was stopped being fed or cured and his heart stopped. I heard a whisper from the consulate, that the hospital would discard the body. When I checked later (3 days) my son's body in the freezer (I saw a frozen tear from his eye), I exited and asked how to get my son's body out, they said that no monies were paid and I would have to secure the 40,000 rmb before I could remove him.

Still today he remains, and I have been studying cryonics ever since.... Hope to find some special herbs in Tibet....to..... (thank you for listening...)
