UAE takes over US ports: So what?
I have sat by for days as the worst sort of paranoia and xenophobia was trumpeted over the issue of the UAE firm selected to manage major US ports.  This morning, the local paper has run a political cartoon by Trever of the Albuquerque Journal depicting the UAE managers as a Trojan Horse, that is to say, an intending enemy.  I can't sit idle any longer.  Instead, I have to say, "How stupid can you be?"  In hopes of educating at least one more American mind, I offer a few ideas:

  1. The contract is for managers, not guardians.  The Coast Guard and the Department of Commerce will still safeguard the harbors just as they would under any management.
  2. The managers don't decide what enters the ports.  The same ship traffic will move in the same sea lanes regardless of management.  What the managers decide is how efficiently that traffic is handled.
  3. The UAE firm is known for excellent management.  (And now to the meatier issues.)
  4. Not all Arabs are terrorists.  In truth, Arab terrorists are about as abundant, proportionally speaking, as white Skinheads, black rappers, or Asian martial arts masters.
  5. The UAE is and has been a friend to the US in the Middle East.  To say that we can't trust them because they are Arabs is an expression of bigoted ignorance.  To say that we can't trust them because they produced a couple of the 9-11 terrorists is to apply a gross stereotype.  After all, America produced Charles Manson and Marilyn Manson; what does that make YOU?

Faith healing, visions, and other foreign stuff
An expat gets to witnesses religious experiences abroad that they rarely see at home.  I'm referring to faith healing shows, statues that weep or bleed, apparitions (or rather, reactions thereto), flagellations and excoriations, crucifixions, pilgrimages, and the like. Continue Reading
ExPat Brides
How successful are the many mail-order bride sites out there?  A woman changing countries to become a bride isn't an expat, she's an intending immigrant, and therein lies the question.  How many aren't intending to stay?  How many take the money and bail out? Continue Reading

Expats and Holidays
I'd like to hear from you expats who make a show of celebrating your own national holidays as you would "back home".  Do you invite foreign friends to celebrate with you?  Has it become a tradition that they look forward to? Continue Reading

Expats (not visitors) in Torino
One week into the Winter Olympics I'm prompted to ask, are there any out there who were fortunate/unfortunate enough to be living as expats in the Torino (Turin) area at the time of the Games?  I'd love to hear descriptions of what the Games and the crowds have meant to the quality of life.  Continue Reading

America-Mexico Relations Summarized
As long as I'm talking (in separate entries) about the rough spots between cultures, I ought to clear my brain of a few issues centered on the U.S.-Mexico border.  Expats on both sides of that border could benefit from some... Continue Reading
What Do Muslims Have Against the West?
Sadly, we see attacks by some Muslims as attacks by Islam, and it just isn't so.  But we are left to wonder, what do they have against us?  Here's what, in brief: Continue Reading
Muhammad Cartoons a Bad Idea
There has been quite a flap the past few days over the widespread publication of some political cartoons depicting the prophet Muhammad in a bad light--one even showing him with a turban-cum-bomb with a lit fuse.  Bad taste, bad manners, bad judgment.  Continue Reading

Do Humans have a Homing Instinct?

How many of you expats are living overseas in an ancestral homeland?  What motivated you to move there?  I have often heard travelers talk about the strange feeling of belonging they get when visiting the places their ancestors knew.  If you were driven by this odd sense of belonging to pack up and move, please let me know.

The ExPat Life in India
I'm asking for input from expats with experience in India, especially from those who have been there for several years.  Just wondering if the influx of foreign investment is making a difference. Continue Reading
