I remember learning about the Virgin of San Vicente de Tagua Tagua in Chile and the story of how she miraculously trasnported herself from one parish to another. I remember hearing the story of the Virgin of Guadalupe in Mexico. I remember a movie about the Virgin of Fatima in Spain. And virgins aren't the only show in town. I remember accounts of pilgrims crawling miles on bloody knees or having themselves crucified in the Philippines. And I remember a South America girl named Yamilet (what ever happened to Yamilet?) who reputedly had miraculous healing powers. She made the rounds of stadiums throughout Latin America, drawing huge crowds. She even healed some television viewers in their homes, according to newspaper reports.
This is the stuff of good local lore. These episodes are the evidence of faithfulness and a strong religious base. They should be seen for what they express about the local culture.
