Helping Foreign Friends Get a Visa - Part II
Part 2: How visas are issued.
Visa applicants appear at the window of a consul (or vice consul or consular agent) and present an application.  To get there, they may have had to travel for many hours and stand in line for even more hours.  To prepare their applications, they may have relied on professional services and advisors, all in hopes of making it acceptable.  Once they hand the application and their passport to the consul, a short interview usually follows.  How long do they intend to stay?  Where is the money coming from?  What ties do they have to their homeland?  In short, what evidence is there they will use the visa for its intended and legal purpose of allowing them into the country for a short (non-working) visit, and then return home?

If the consul is satisfied with the answers and the application, the applicant is told to come back later in the day to get the pasport with visa.  Then the person's name and data are checked against a database to see if there is any reason they shouldn't be believed, such as not revealing a previous denial or an over-stay on a previous visa.  if all check out OK, a visa is placed in the passport by stamp or sticker.  If not, there may be a second interview and, if the consul's suspicions are not overcome, the applicant is out of luck, and his/her data will be put into that database of negative information.

As you can see, it can be a costly, tiring, frustrating process, even when all goes well.  I'd love to hear experiences from applicants, successful and not.  (I had one woman pass out when I denied her application)

Dear Sir,
I should like to draw your attention to the fact, that your missive relating to gaining visa's to visit the U.S.A, especially from China, stretch credulity to the extreme.
It is a known fact, that the majority of the staff in overseas American embassies, are arrogant, overbearing, supercilious, and have a penchant for knowingly stating a falsehood.

Coupled to that fact, is their complete lack of interest in actually doing the job that us 'plebs', whom form the tax base from which they obtain their salaries, would like to see them perform.

As for the imbecilic, moronic cretins that actually pose as "interviewing/reviewing officers for visa applicants". What a pathetic, motley group of ill-mannered, ill-advised and totally ignorant body of miscreants they are, collectively and individually.

The former INS service is a joy to work with, compared to the idiots that staff the foreign service visa sections. Oh would some person, view the garbage that personifies the overseas visa sections, and place the lot of them under the jurisdiction of the INS. That at least would ensue a fair hearing, and intelligent advice!

my father, applied for an american passport for me and i was refused one while my other siblings got thiers on the grounds that i was over aged and was told to petition on the grounds that i had been to the united states when i was young, but when he sent his petition,he said i was asked to wait for five years,i need to get a very good explaination for been refused and why i have to wait that long, pls i would appreciate it if you would reply my mail and soon too.ill look forward to your quick response.

Dear Sir
My daughter took valuable time out of final year university to travel from Limerick to American embassy to get her visa She was refused on the grounds that her passport is too tatty for the American government even though she traveled to America with it in 2006 and has used it in Europe since.A new one will cost her 125 euro and also more time and travelling which she can ill afford . Her flight is booked for the end of May.Can you provide any advice please. Thanking you.
