Travelling with Pets
My family went pet-less overseas and then got a dog in the Middle East.  We named him Morgen.  He was a Dalmatian.  And when it came time to move from one overseas location to another, he was a hungry, nervous, piece of freight.  All things considered, having a large pet is not very compatible with expat life.  You can take your pet with you, but you must anticipate complications.

Pets that travel as freight (as most do) are subject to all the same conditions as luggage, including getting lost.  Morgen once went to Detroit when we didn't.  We got him back a day after our arrival.  The sedatives prescribed by the veterinarian (another consideration) had worn off, and he was a wreck.  And then there are the entry procedures and even possible quarantines to consider.  A few countries make it very hard to bring in a pet, and the information on procedures for importing an animal can be hard to obtain outside the country.

I'd be interested in hearing your warnings, anecdotes, and advice about travelling with pets.

No anecdotes yet, but we are planning to take our three (yes, three) cats with us to Seoul from the United States. We are fortunate in that, provided we have proper vaccinations and documentation, there is no quarantine. Organizing the flight plans is another story.

I'll probably post a longer reply to this later, after all is said and done. I'll be interested to hear what others' experiences are like as well.

Matt, because of all the reasons you mentioned here I don't own an animal. Once travel slows to a crawl and I get older -- hey that is nearer than I'll admit -- I plan to have a pet again.

Mine went with my darling daughter and I took a break. Something in the tale of read here, of your own dog made that day closer for me to get another. Thanks.

Matt's Note: Are you abroad now?

I don't think it's normal that the animals should be carried exactly wehere the luggage is, it makes them sick as you said already. Maybe we should find a solution and then collect signatures in favor of our proposal; Then we send the petition to the air-companies that will obliged this way to establish suitable accomodation for our furry friends

I had a tomcat, I called him Blue and I took him only in the car. I never had the heart to put him through flying in those awful conditions.
